For my lesson on the prefixes un- and re- I found fun centers to do in the classroom, and the students loved the fun games using the prefixes un- and re-.
In my primary literacy field, I was placed into a second-grade classroom as a literacy aide for 7 weeks for 1 hour per week beginning in early October to early November. I was in Mrs. Tina King’s classroom at Oakview Elementary School in Stoneboro, Pennsylvania. During my time in second grade, Mrs. King always had something for me to do whether it was grading writing responses or pulling her literacy tests. I was able to teach a lesson on the prefixes re- and un- which was a valuable learning experience for me. It was so much fun to write a lesson plan and then be able to teach that lesson for real classroom students. I went into the field with an open mind and ready to tackle anything that was given to me. It was a great feeling walking into the classroom every week. The students would get out of their seats and run over to hug me and to tell me that they missed me. I also had almost every student hug me on my last day of the field experience and I got a lot of questions like, “why can’t you be our teacher now? or “can you come tomorrow to teach our class again?”. It was such a heart-warming experience to work with Mrs. King’s students every week. My most memorable experience in the classroom was my second visit to second grade. I prepared my introduction activity that I created in the Primary Literacy class with different objects about myself that I could share with the students. They loved choosing items and trying to guess what they had to do with my life. It was so much fun to see their eyes light up when they had something in common with me. I also got to read my favorite children’s book, Stellaluna and I loved all of the student’s reactions and how much they loved the book and wanted Mrs. King to get a copy for their classroom. Even the boys liked it! I have learned so much from Mrs. King these past weeks. She has a very firm tone of voice when speaking to her students who are acting out, but her students do what she says. She is an excellent teacher. Another thing I learned was to be flexible. Mrs. King gave me two lessons to prepare, the prefixes re- and un- and then a fun Halloween lesson for the students. Unfortunately, she forgot I was teaching the sight word bingo lesson she had me prepare and I was not able to do it. I was very disappointed because I was very excited about it, but had to realize that in the real world, plans might change. However, I now have a lesson I can do in the future.
For Halloween I got to read There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat by Lucille Colandro. The students loved guessing what Halloween monster the Old Lady would swallow next!
For my last visit, Mrs. King had me read a Thankgiving book about 3 turkeys who tried to escape the farmer and not get eaten for dinner!
The students loved my bat ears when I read There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat for Halloween!
