What is component 3d? Component 3d focuses on assessment being an important role in instruction. Assessment is not the end of instruction but is an essential part of instruction. Assessment of learning has been important for teacher to know whether or not student have learned what was intended but assessment for learning has increasingly become an important role in the classroom. In order to assess student learning, teachers must monitor student understand and offer feedback to students. When teachers are monitoring student learning, they look carefully at what students are writing, listening to questions they ask, in order to gauge what additional information they need or if they need an explanation. The teacher may circle the room to ask students’ questions, teachers are alert to students’ misconceptions. For the purpose of monitoring, many teachers create questions to determine student understanding and use techniques (such as exit tickets) to determine the degree of understanding of every student in the class.
Why is it needed? Component 3d is needed because assessment is a needed role in instruction. Teachers need to know what their students are attaining and what needs further explanation. Teachers need to monitor the classroom and circulate and walk around answering and asking questions that will deepen students’ understanding. The teacher should have a technique to determine what the students understood in the lesson. Having a type of exit ticket everyday will allow teachers to see what students know and what they need more help with.
What are the elements of component 3d? Assessment criteria. Students need to know the criteria for assessment. Monitoring of student learning. The teacher’s monitoring skills are planned in advance. The teacher must weave monitoring of student learning seamlessly into the lessons, using several techniques. Feedback to students. Feedback on learning is an essential element of the instructional environment. Without feedback, students are guessing about how they are doing and how their work can improve. Valuable feedback must be timely and constructive to provide students the guidance they need to improve their work. Student self-assessment and monitoring of progress. The peak of students’ assuming responsibility for their learning is when they monitor their own learning and take appropriate action. They can do these things only if the criteria for learning are clear and they have been taught the skills of checking their work against clear criteria. How can it be implemented in the classroom? Teachers pay close attention to student understanding by walking around the classroom, answering questions, and answering questions to deepen understanding. Teachers monitor students learning and offer feedback. Teacher use an exit ticket to see what students learn. Teachers can post a question to Padlet, or have students tweet something they learned in class. Students assessing their own work against established criteria. Have students make a check list to check their work to the criteria. Teachers could also have students rate their learning (embedded below) before they leave the classroom.
