What is component 4d? Component 4d focuses on teachers participating in a professional community. Schools promote the learning of students. When promoting student learning, teachers need to work with their colleagues to share strategies, plan efforts, and plan for the success of all students. Schools are professional organizations for teachers – only realized when teachers regard themselves as members of a professional community. A professional community is characterized by mutual support, respect, and by recognition of the responsibility of teachers to be seeking ways to improve their practice and contribute to the school. Teachers’ duties go beyond the doors of their classrooms and include activities related to the school or district. These activities include school and district curriculum committees or engagement with parent-teacher organization. Teachers can have leadership roles in these activities as well. Why is it needed? Component 4d is needed because teachers need to be involved in the school community. Teachers need to support and respect the community they work in and participate in activities beyond the school. Teachers need to be included in the school or district committees to interact with parents and establish a good community inside the classroom with the students and outside the classroom with parents.
What are the elements of component 4d? Relationships with colleagues. Teachers have a professional relationship with co-workers that encourages sharing, planning and working together toward improved skill and student success. Involvement in a culture of professional inquiry. Teachers contribute to and participate in a learning community that supports and respects its members’ efforts to improve practice. Service to the school. Teachers’ efforts move beyond the classroom by to contributing to school initiatives and projects. Participation in school and district projects. Teachers contribute to and support larger school and district projects designed to improve the professional community.
How can it be implemented into the classroom? Teachers regularly participate with colleagues to share and plan for student success. Teachers participation in professional courses or communities that emphasize improving practice. Participation in school initiatives and community initiatives. Teachers take leadership roles in organizing activities with parents. Creating a PowerPoint and sharing to other colleagues. Log leadership activities. Having meetings with committee members and take notes. Get involved in the community like plan events. Attend different school functions – sport events, fairs, etc.
