What is component 2C? Component 2c of Domain 2 focuses on instructions and students' engagement in the classroom. Teachers need to have regular routines to keep the classroom efficient and on track of time. In order to use time wisely and keep students on tasks teachers need to set up transitions between lessons and other activities. Having an efficient and engaged classroom will allow routines to go smoothly and the classroom will be successful.
Why is it needed? Every classroom should follow a certain routine placed and monitored by the teacher. Classrooms with a routine will allow the student to know what is expected of them and will have a feel for how the day will go. Having a routine in the classroom will keep students on task and work will get done faster. Classrooms without a routine will lead to confusion and the students will not know what is expected of them.
What are the elements? Management of instructional groups. Teachers need to help students with the skills of working together in a team with little teacher guidance. Students need to develop these communication skills to be able to work and collaborative within a group. For example, when students leave high school and go to further their education or go into the work force, they will have to have social skills to do group and team projects to get the work done. Management of transitions. Lessons will engage students in several activities including different types of group and individual work. The time in between changing activities should be a minimum and move smoothly. Students should know the routine and execute it. An example in the classroom would be students rotating centers. One center could be practicing writing the student's name and another center all about patterns. When it is time to switch activities, students should not waste time in between and rotate to the next center smoothly and precisely. Management of materials and supplies. Teachers should have all tools and materials ready to go for the activities students will do during the day. Having the materials ready will keep the flow and routine of the class in order and free of disruption. Teachers who are not prepared for their lesson will lose the students’ engagement and disruption the flow of the lesson. For example, if the teacher assigns a worksheet have the worksheet ready to go in the beginning of the day so students can work on the information right after the lesson and still be engaged. If the teacher will have to go print the worksheet in the middle the class, students would lose interest and get distracted. Performance of non-instructional duties. Teachers should make sure little time is lost in activities such as attendance, lunch count, handing out papers, return of permissions slips. Teachers should be aware of non-instructional duties and know they are important to take care of them but should be done in a timely fashion. For example, teachers could involve students in the non-instructional duties like having a student count the lunches. Artifacts to be used in the classroom! Teachers should have a routine everyday so the students will be able expect what the day will bring. In an elementary classroom, teachers could make little signs with the subjects and activities that are planned for the day. Examples of subjects would be "writing", "math", "science" etc. Having this posted in a place all students can see the plan for the day. Teachers can also use a classroom helper chart with jobs such as "line leader", "weather checker", "lunch counter", etc. This will also make the students feel important and respected. Teachers should teach about center rules if they want activities going on in the classroom at the same time. Students should know how to efficiently move from center to center without wasting time for learning. Having an attendance board so when students come into the class they put themselves "in school" and also can pick their lunch choice for the day. Music could be a fun and efficient way to transition. In a preschool room, having a "clean up song" so students know when that song comes on it is time to clean up. Also, having the toy bins having matching labels to where they go will be a fun and effected way to clean up since it will be like a game.
