What is component 4b? Component 4b is the essential responsibility of educators keeping accurate records of instructional and noninstructional events. This record keeping includes student assignments, student progress in learning and records of noninstructional activities such as: permission slips and money for school pictures. Proficiency in this component is vital because these records inform interactions with students and parents. This allows teachers to monitor learning and adjust instruction when needed. The methods of keeping records vary. For example, records of formal assessments may be recorded electronically with the use of spreadsheets and databases. A less formal means of keeping track of student progress may include notes that are kept in student folders.
Why is it needed? Maintaining accurate records is needed so teachers can monitor students progress and be organized with records in their classroom. Teachers need to keep assignments on record to record student progress so if a parent or principal needs to see grades of a student the teacher will be able to quickly give them grades. This is especially important in a high school setting when sports and activities eligibility are a concern.
What are the elements of component 4b? Student completion of assignments. Teachers (secondary level) need to keep track of student completion of assignments. This includes the completion of the assignment and the success. Student progress in learning. Teachers need to know where each student “is” in his or her learning. This information could be collected formally or informally and must be updated frequently. Non-instructional records. These records must be maintained especially if they involve money. Examples for non-instructional records include, permission slips for a field trip, student paying for their school pictures, or book fair money for the book fair.
How can it be implemented in the classroom? Teachers should have routines and systems that track the completion of assignments. This system should also have information of the student’s progress and outcomes. Teachers need to keep noninstructional records organized. Using spreadsheets and databases to track student completion and grades will allow teachers to be organize and have grades on hand. The teacher can use Bloomz to upload grades and send grades to parents.
