What is component 1D? Component 1D focuses on teacher’s using resources to enhance student learning. Some schools provided these resources and materials and others are provided by teachers. These resources fall into several categories including those used in the classroom by students, available beyond the classroom, and that provide noninstructional assistance to students. Teachers need to know the important of using resources that are valuable to students to enhance their learning. Teachers need to choose that resources that will be of most use to the students and ensure materials and resources are appropriate to challenge every student. For example, tests are available in different levels so if students have a learning disability, teachers need to create a test that is both challenging for students but not impossible based on their level in the classroom. Expert teachers look beyond the resources provided by the school and bring subjects to life to assist students who need help in their academic and nonacademic lives.
Why is it needed? Teachers need to correctly use resources given to them by the school. For example, if a classroom has a interactive smart board the teacher should use this resource to its full potential. This could be having students come up to the board to fill in the blanks to their answers, creating presentations and displaying them on the board or having students playing games like Pictionary or hangman with vocabulary words. Teachers need to know the level of each student to know what they are capable of doing and not get frustrated because a test is too hard. It is different if a student doesn’t study for a test but having a student get frustrated over a problem because they cannot do it should be a sign that student is not ready for a test as hard as the other students. The teacher should adapt that test to be on the level of the child. Doing this the teacher needs to be aware of still challenging the student and enhancing the learning. Not only do teachers need to use the school’s resources but also need to use their own ideas to enhance the classroom. Using their own resources will allow teachers to step out of their comfort zone and give the students a learning they will never forget. For example, teachers could transform the classroom based on the lesson they share this could be setting up tents for a camping lesson or creating different flexible settings in the classroom.
What are the elements? Resources for classroom use. The materials and resources teachers use align with the learning outcomes of the students. For example, teachers need to use the textbook and worksheets when teaching grammar to give practice problems. With math, teachers need to provide calculators and the tools to do a problem like a ruler for measuring. Resources to extend content knowledge and pedagogy. Materials are also given to teachers to further their knowledge. For example, having inservice meetings to give more information to teachers. Having speakers come and let them tell their experiences in the classroom and different ideas they use. Another thing that can be provided to teachers are more classes to expand their knowledge in a certain area they teach. Providing technology and classes on how to incorporate technology in the classroom is a great example. Teachers need to be involved on social media to connect to other expert teachers and ask them questions regarding a certain topic. Resources for students. The materials provided to students are appropriately challenging. Teachers need to know what is challenging to each student and know what is challenging to one student could be differently to what is challenging to another. For example, one student could find 2 + 2 challenging and be the same grade level as a student who thinks 2 x 2 is challenging. As teachers it is important to challenge students but make the challenge enhance their learning. Resources that do not have to be used in the classroom.
Artifacts to be used in the classroom! 1D can be used in the classroom in several ways. Providing resources the school provides to students such as textbooks, paper, workbooks (homework problem sheet), science equipment and math tools (rulers, calculators, plastic clocks, manipulatives, etc). Utilizing these resources will enhance the student's learning not having students in class listening the the teacher but having hands on activities. Teachers could also use laptops and iPads to use online tools that are useful for learning. For example, a primary classroom with laptops could do math activities online, study websites such as Study Island, Quizlet, etc. and games such as Kahoot. Teachers need to expand their knowledge by attending classes and meeting when provided and take advantage of these resources.
