What is component 1C? Component 1C focuses that everything teachers teach has a purpose. All activities are directed towards the desired learning. Teachers should instruct exactly what the students will be expected to learn. This outcome is not what the student does but what he/she will learn. The instructions should reflect the importance of learning. Students also need various forms of assessments to demonstrate what they have learn and make sure they understand the content. Learning outcomes include: factual and procedural knowledge, conceptual understanding, thinking and reasoning skills, and collaborative and communication strategies. Experienced teachers can link their learning outcomes with others both within their discipline and in other disciplines.
Why is it needed? It is important for students to realize how important learning is. Not only is it important for students to learn but educators also hope they will like to learn. Every worksheet, quiz, project, test, activity must have a propose in the classroom to engage student to further their learning. Instructions are needed for the desired outcome the teacher expects. If the teacher gives instructions to go to centers without thoroughly telling which students or group of students go where will create chaos. Teachers need to give clear instructions to keep the process and transitions go smoothly (2c) in order to focus on the student’s learning.
What are the elements of component 1c? Value, sequence, and alignment. Students must be able to build their understanding of important ideas from concept to concept. Clarity. Outcomes must refer to what students will learn, not what they will do, and must complete methods of assessment. Balance. Outcomes should reflect different types of learning, such as knowledge, conceptual understanding, and thinking skills. When students finish all their schooling, they need these skills to be successful in life not just the classroom. Suitability for diverse students. Outcomes must be appropriate for all students in the class.
How can it be implemented into the classroom? Teachers can make a list of expectations in the classroom. Teachers need to find engaging activities or crafts to do in the classroom. Teachers need to incorporate all the students when creating lesson plans. Teachers need to create their own assessment not just pulling other teacher’s assessments. Lesson plans need to align with the state, school’s curriculum. Instructions are presented at the beginning of the lesson or activities so students know what the outcome should be. Assessments shows what the students have achieve in their learning.
